How to remove vinyl flooring step 1.
Backing away on floor.
The rubber backing on area rugs can disintegrate over time leaving a nasty residue on the floors beneath.
You still have to scrape but it is much easier.
Start by scraping as much of the rubber backing away as possible.
The only cure for this is to remove the top layer of finish affected.
I had the same thing happen to me i used water.
Four years later when removed floors were good as when rug was placed and discovered crumbling backing was contained by the sheets on the back.
You can see in this photo of the floor at the foot of the bed how the rubber latex backing that had broken down or rotted away on the back of the rug only deteriorated in the areas where the rug received pressure from walking.
Dont know if would work for a longer time frame but was perfect solution for me and sheets are cheap even cheaper at goodwill or thrift stores.

Allow the area to become thoroughly moistened with the lubricant then allow it to set for several minutes up to an hour.
They did and this is how the floors looked in the walking path around the bed.
You can avoid this issue by purchasing backless rugs and holding them in place with materials other than rubber including grip tape and memory foam.
Backing away constitutes a serious violation of industry regulations.
There may be a synthetic rubber backing on the carpet or under pad.
Hold a razor blade or putty knife level with the backing and pry it away gently.
You can t hurt the concrete floor with water so just pour the water onto the sponge and let it soak up leave it on for 15 minutes.
To remove vinyl flooring you must first take all furniture out of the room giving yourself unimpeded access to the work area.
Avoid gouging the wood floor surface with the blade or knife.
Sand off old carpet backing.
In many cases it may be more appropriate to remove the backing by sanding with a floor sander or a floor buffer and a 36 grit sanding screen.
Moisten the remaining rubber with goo gone or another lubricant such as wd 40 or cooking oil.
If these were made with cheap plasticizers they may have migrated into the floor finish which is a kind of plastic also.
Don t touch the backing until you are sure it has.
You can work in patches going back and forth.
